Yes, Mikhail Gorbachev was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and served as its General Secretary from 1985 to 1991. He was a committed communist and worked within the framework of the Soviet political system to implement reforms aimed at revitalizing the country's economy and political structure. However, his policies of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) ultimately led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the end of communist rule in Russia. **

Gorbachev can be seen as a tragic hero in the sense that he attempted to reform the Soviet Union and bring about positive change, but ultimately his efforts led to the collapse of the Soviet system and the end of his own political career. He faced immense challenges and opposition from hardliners within the Communist Party, and his reforms ultimately led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the loss of power for himself and the Communist Party. Despite his good intentions, his actions ultimately led to unintended and tragic consequences. **
